Returning to live model painting

by joeralt on March 31, 2009

It’s been some time that I have worked with a model.Last week I decided to return to the regular practice of working with model since I believe that working with a live model for an artist is like a regular exercise for a pianist without which the hands become rusty so to speak. Of course, it is much more then just exercise and working with a human figure is always a drama not only of form and composition but also of the way the character of the sitter comes trough  and the way the gestures of body and the facial expressions all fit together in a harmonious way. Finding the right balance between all the different  aspects within a give work of art is always a challenge but within a context of a nude figure painting is even more so because of the explicitness and the sexual connotations of  the naked body. In this respect the nakedness of the figure is kind of a hindrance rather then a help since it can easily “steal the show” from the artistic considerations. This is of course trough of every work of art, when the form overpowers the content and it occurs not only in the context of human nakedness. It is true of every form of art where technique is prominent  and execution has precedence over content.
