Clutter versus Clatter

by joeralt on September 1, 2010

It was unusually noisy in my neighborhood café this morning and it took away much of the pleasure of my daily sketching exercise. Still, somehow in all the chaos, there was a weird correspondence between the visual clutter on my table and the audio clatter.
Here is also a short video that shows some of the visual locomotion but the sound is relatively calm so it doesn’t really represent the truth of the situation.

Summer is a great time for outdoor painting

by joeralt on August 23, 2010

Summer is a great time for outdoor painting even though in this region it can be a little too hot and sometimes even brutal like last week, still, there are cooler places like the upper Galilee where some of my good friends are living.
This video here is actually from last year but nothing much ha changed since then and what is in this clip is still relevant.
I am preparing an article about the landscape painting and about the need to restore the lost dialog between Nature and Man , so meanwhile here is just a little glimpse into a part of my process that is based on some intuitive searching for interesting places and luckily for me, some of them are actually in the backyards of remarkable people who also happen to be my good friends. Here in the front open porch of Hadar and Yaakov, who’s house and guest rooms situated on the very edge of the this beautiful village of Kerem Ben Zimra , I am sketching in watercolor, looking for a concept that would allow me to get into the landscape with more than just copying the scenery. I have to return to this place and find a new entry, since the last attempt was not so successful, aside from the fact that painting outdoors, is always a very pleasant activity, especially when spoiled with good coffee and beer from the fridge.
Maybe I shall return to the place in the very near future.

Polar bear on the window seal

Polar bear on the window seal

This morning I had an opportunity to play with iPad brushes application.I played with this application on my iPhone before but with the bigger screen of iPad it’s a whole new ball game.At the risk of sounding like a commercial for Steve Jobs , I think that this is a truly remarkable device that will no doubt enhance the flow of creativity for many professional artists as well for amateurs who just want to play with this wonderful tool.

What is a good painter’s model?

April 30, 2010

When the model is good, the whole process of painting is full of magic. What is a good model you may ask? In my opinion, a good model is someone who’s character is inspiring and at the same time can sit in comfort for extended periods of time. Preferably, also someone who has an appreciation of the creative process that feels like contributing to the creation of Ar

I love children’s art .Once in a while I get to know a child that allows me to peek at their scribbling and doodles and I feel very privileged to be shown into their visual ideas. There is always much originality within the context of the known and well defined patterns.Love those bright colors and [...]
